Dorothy Gibson (May 17, 1889 February 17, 1946) was a pioneer of silent film actress, artist, model and singer active in the early 20th century. She is best remembered as a survivor of the sinking of RMS Titanic.
Biography
Early life and career
The daughter of John A. Brown and Pauline Boesen, Gibson was born Dorothy Winifred Brown in Hoboken, New Jersey. His father died when she was three and his mother remarried John Leonard Gibson. Between 1906 and 1911, she appeared on stage as a singer and dancer in a number of theater productions and vaudeville, the largest being in the Broadway musical by Charles Frohman The dairy (1907). She was also a regular singer emissions produced by the Shubert Brothers, the Hippodrome Theatre.

In 1909, the year before she married George Battier, Jr., Gibson began posing for famous Harrison Fisher commercial artist, becoming one of his favorite models. His image appears regularly on posters, postcards, products merchandising and various book illustrations over the next three years. Fisher also often chosen for its resemblance to the covers of bestsellers magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Ladies Home Journal and the Saturday Evening Post. Gibson was widely publicized during this time of "the girl of Harrison Fisher. "

Film career
Represented by top theatrical agent Pat Casey, Gibson came in 1911 in the early films, to join the Independent Movement Picture (IMP) as a supplement and later the Lubin studios as a player exchange. She was hired as leading lady in the new branch of U.S. studios den, based in Paris in July 1911. It was an instant hit with audiences, becoming one of the leading actresses in the new media film to be promoted as a "star" in its own right. Praised for its natural, subtle style of play, it was particularly effective as an actress, in such a popular one reelers as Miss Masquerade (1911) and Love Finds a Way (1912), all of which were produced in Fort Lee, New Jersey, and the center of the American film industry booming.

Despite its popularity in comedies, one of its most important parts was that of Molly Pitcher in the historical drama, Hands Across the Sea (1911), Car Lightning debut and his first star turn. Role of Gibson's most famous screen is itself saved from the Titanic (1912), based on his experiences in the disaster legendary. Saved from the Titanic, released one month after the sinking, was the first of many films about the event.

The Titanic is the best known aspect of the life of Gibson. After spending six weeks in Italy with her mother, she returned aboard the Titanic for a new series of images Flash to Fort Lee. The women had been playing bridge with friends in the lounge, the night of the fatal collision of the ship with the iceberg. With two their playing partners they escaped in the lifeboat launched. After arriving in New York on the rescue ship Carpathia, Gibson was convinced by her manager to appear in a film based on the sinking. She not only played in the drama of a coil, but wrote the screenplay. It even appeared in the same clothes she had worn on the Titanic a gown of white silk evening top with a cardigan jacket and polo.
Although saved from the Titanic was a huge success in America, England, France and the only known prints were destroyed in a fire 1914 in the studios of lair. The loss of image movement is considered by film historians as one of the largest in the silent era. Other Gibson's achievements in film included the first star in one of the first feature films made in the USA (Hands Across the Sea, 1911), co-starred in the first American play produced serial or chapter (Revenge of the silk masks, 1912), and by one of the first ever public appearance by a film personality (January 1912).
Contemporary with Mary Pickford, Gibson was the highest paid actress in the film world time of his premature retirement in May 1912.
